a learner's journey . . .
Life is an amazing journey, full of twists and turns, ups and downs and not unlike the mysterious ruins of Machu Picchu above, a series of gateways through which one can venture. I'm thrilled that my journey has allowed me to pass through a number of doors to learning. As a teacher, I've had the privilege of teaching at a number of levels: middle school, high school, college and graduate school. As an organizational leader, I've served on school committees and was proud to collaborate with my fellow state colleagues as President of the Illinois Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. My most important role is as an advocate for language learning and the state Seal of Biliteracy movement for which I was recognized with a 2013 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching and as the ACTFL 2014 National Language Teacher of the Year. That journey has let me to my newest adventure as the Executive Director of the Global Seal of Biliteracy which expands access and opportunity to even more bilinguals, no matter where, when or how they acquired their language skills.
The purpose of this website is to provide thoughts for considerations and resources to my fellow language educators. This site, like me, is under continuous construction; we'll call us both "a work in progress." After more than 35 years in the Spanish language classroom at all levels from elementary to university, I've learned that change is a good thing. It challenges us to adopt new perspectives and acquire new skills. Follow my journey here and on Facebook and Twitter @miprofeAP. The hashtag I'd love you to share is #2bilit2quit !
I'm including links to some of my workshops and presentations, feel free to share but kindly identify me as your source. Feel free to contact me through this "Write me note" box if you're interested in scheduling your own presentation or workshop or just have a question. Also included is an Advocacy section to help support my K-12 vision for language education and the State and Global Seals of Biliteracy. I welcome your suggestions and feedback!
